My artwork is comprised of abstractions from the natural world, representing objects ranging from the microscopic to the macrocosmic. The use of a traditional pointillist technique, in a computer paint program, allows me to create a visually textured environment in which compositions are reduced to their essence. I attempt to depict the unseen - the inner tension of molecules at play, the jostling of subatomic particles, the mysteries that lie at the threshold of perception and the extents of the universe – attributes which transcend the underlying rhythms of matter.
As such I am inspired by the recent images of our universe taken by the Webb Telescope. I am overwhelmed by the physicality of all that is eternal and the astral appearances of multi-colored lights that dance above our heads. Through Webb Space Telescope can visualize the earliest galaxies and stars, peering through cosmic dust to which divulge the earliest traces of our Universe, our stars and planet formation, We can now envision how neo-planets are formed, their atmospheres of exoplanets, and observe objects like galaxies, black holes, and nebulae with unprecedented detail using infrared light. Its ability to detect infrared light allows it to see parts of the universe hidden from visible-light telescopes like Hubble. We can now record observations which peer back over 13.5 billion years, witnessing the first stars and forms of galaxies out of the darkness of the early universe.
I see the world as a mosaic of color, light, shadow and texture. My art is a gift from the universe and my canvases and impressionist prints are simply a vessel to capture the great beauty I see and the energy that is contained in all things. My aim is to share a message of inspiration and a celebration of life. I have found a means through this technique in which to fulfill my desire to construct and organize my world in this manner. I would love to manage and organize all these beams of light and place them on a canvass. Using pointillism painting allows me to realize my lover affair with color as pixels, filled with color, playfully interacting with other pixels Through this technique I can play with nuances of brilliant colors, generate abstract forms which spring forth from an array of colored reflections.
Wonder, mystery and a desire to explore the beyond are realized when I navigate through pulsating particles of matter and their underlying structures. I seek to portray a world of pure sensual experience, which goes beyond the ordinary boundaries of the physical world. When I create a work of art, I envision compositions reduced to their essence. Working in a pointillist style helps me to delve into this world of vague, nebulous forms so I can work with the underlying rhythm of objects. Through these abstracted microscopic details, I can create images which vibrate with life as they spring forth from an array of colored reflections. Through these variations of tones, I can reveal the inner tension of molecules at play. The images that I choose to depict are defined by chance -- the knowledge that there is something before and after the present moment. It is through this creative process that I am able to achieve some semblance of order from the inherently chaotic behavior that I perceive in nature.
Art connects people by fostering empathy, highlighting shared humanity, and creating a sense of community through both shared viewing and creation. It acts as a universal language that transcends cultural differences and provides a space for emotional expression, reflection, and dialogue that can bridge gaps between individuals and groups. Communication through art is a nonverbal form of expression where an artist conveys ideas, emotions, and stories to a viewer through visual elements like color, shape, and texture. The artist uses line, color, texture, and composition to convey a message or evoke a specific emotion. It acts as a powerful medium for communicating beyond words, bridging gaps in understanding, and allowing for deeper connections. This can be seen in a child expressing anxiety through a messy drawing or in an artist using a landscape to communicate a spiritual feeling.

I consider myself an “outdoor” painter, also known as a Plein Aire Painter. Once someone asked me, “Why plein aire?” My answer,”because being outdoors offers an infinite array of possibilities and within that finite experience there is even more finite experiences tickling our minds.” My finite experiences will exist for brief moments in time...but my goal is to bestow infinite, upon infinite experiences on others as they view my work.

Lake Louise

Water is life, yet it is also fragile. From the East River viewing the New York skyline, to the shrinking blue glaciers surrounding Lake Louise, to Murano’s colorful canals, these images show how deeply our lives are tied to water. Each place tells the same story: water sustains us, inspires us, and makes our communities possible—but it is at risk. Rising seas, melting ice, and shifting tides remind us that protecting clean water is not just about the environment; it is vital to our survival. By honoring water’s beauty, we are implored to care for its future and for our own.

Red Umbrella

Like most, my attraction to water is compelling. Bubbles tickle my flesh as I take a plunge. Vibrant contrasts of color between sea, sky and a red beach umbrella exude visual joy. Salt-tinged ethers where sand, sun and sea collide provide the perfect playground for children to explore the richness of their youth. All three of these works express different responses to water, but all color water “wonderful.”

With my work, regardless of medium there is a layering process that occurs in stages, be it physically or metaphorically. Exploration is also key, be it through the material, colors, or subject itself. For me the process is almost as crucial as the final results, and serves to inform not only the piece at hand but also future ones. I find that once completed, each piece takes something from me and I from it.

As an artist, filmmaker and social worker, my passion is listening to others tell me their story. Whether I am doing a form of therapeutic art with a client or filming a short, I believe art is a vast medium that allows us to connect with others by sharing our stories. What is your story? When I am not a social worker, I am filming, editing, doodling and tinkering with ordinary objects.

The Stillness that Healed
by Maria Friscia

$5600

Getting lost in the woods, climbing a mountain, or just watching a stream flow - that's where I feel truly alive. Nature's got this magic power to connect me to something bigger than myself. It's like my soul starts talking, whispering about ideas and feelings that only nature can spark. Trees, mountains, water… they all speak to me in a language of emotions. The peace of a forest, the power of a mountain, the gentle flow of a stream - it's all so inspiring, almost like a religious experience, connecting me to the universe. It's like all the stresses of life just melt away, and I'm left focusing on that core part of me, my spirit.

This piece shows our failed promise to the ocean. The crocheted background is colored like the sea, shades blue then the white foam. The broken glass represents the pieces of garbage we have let fill the sea. I hope the viewer understands the jagged edge we are living within.

Daughters of the Waters

Acrylic & pencil on canvas
$575

“Daughters of the Waters” are paintings that came through my being at the nexus of nature, culture and Spirit, following my travels to Cuba and Brazil. There - where African traditions are a living presence - it is understood that we are each held in the embrace of a specific force of nature. These paintings are the expressions of my conversations with the waters…the loving, guiding, purifying maternal force that surrounds and imbues each of us.
